The Parable of the Highest Seat at the World Cup

This is an adaptation of the parable of Jesus found in Luke 14:7–11.

  1. And when Jesus noticed how those with great power chose for themselves the places of honour, he told them a parable, saying,
  2. “When thou art invited to the Football World Cup, do not sit down in the highest place, saying unto thyself, ‘This tournament is in my land, and therefore the rules shall bend before me.’
  3. For a certain Donald, ruler of America, saw that one of his own players had been shown a red card, and was forbidden from playing in the match that was to come.
  4. And Donald was troubled in his heart, and he lifted up the telephone, and called unto FIFA, saying, ‘Look again upon this judgement, for this man is of my people, and I would have him restored unto the field.’
  5. And FIFA heard the voice of Donald, and the punishment was taken away; and the player was permitted to stand once more among the eleven.
  6. But when the day of the match had come, Belgium rose up against America, and smote them by four goals to one. And the people of America were brought low before the nations.
  7. Then many who watched said among themselves, ‘Was this not the man who took the highest seat? Did he not reach his hand into the place of judgement? And yet his team has been humbled upon the field.’
  8. Then the master of the feast said unto him, ‘Friend, take a lower place. For the World Cup is not given to the loudest voice, nor to the strongest ruler, but to those who earn their place upon the grass.’
  9. For everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled, and he who humbles himself shall be exalted.”
