Pinnacles Walk

Are you searching for an ideal introduction to overnight hiking and hut stays, paired with breathtaking views? Look no further than the Pinnacles Walk in the Coromandel. This iconic hike is one of New Zealand’s premier short overnight trails, renowned for its stunning sunsets and sunrises from the rocky summit.

Conveniently located within a short drive from Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga, the trail follows an old Kauri logging route, leading to the jagged summit. It can be completed as a day hike or an overnight adventure, with the Pinnacles Hut offering comfortable accommodation.

The round trip from the carpark to the summit takes about six and a half hours (plus time for breaks and photos), making it feasible as a day hike. However, the real magic lies in experiencing the sunset and sunrise from the summit.

The hike begins at the end of Kauaeranga Valley Road, just outside Thames. There are two main tracks for the lower half of the hike, merging at the old Hydro Camp before continuing to the Pinnacles Hut and the peak. You can mix and match your routes: take one up and another down or stick to the same path both ways.

We opted for the Webb Creek Track both ways – it is the more popular option, being shorter and less steep than the Billygoat Track. It features a cool swing bridge and the impressive 180m Billygoat Falls. The trail also includes historic elements like logs used to create a skidded road for logging.

The track itself was split into 3 sections. The first 2km section from the carpark was relatively flat with wide paths as you walk beside the river.
The middle section is steep, rocky and has steeps that go on forever. You are essentially following an old logging skid way which is rutted out, wet and rocky.
The final 2km is once you have pushed through the bush line and is once again relatively flat and your reward is amazing views of the Pinnacles Hut and the Pinnacles themselves.
If you decide to push onto the Pinnacles, the final climb is around 1km and includes a few ladders to assist with the ascent. The 360-degree views from the top of the Coromandel Peninsula are truly rewarding.

The Pinnacles Hut is the largest and one of the most luxurious DOC huts in New Zealand. It provides excellent facilities, including cooking equipment, a fireplace, solar lighting, compostable toilets, bunks with mattresses, and even a BBQ. Bookings must be made in advance on the DOC website. A word of warning, when we went there were lots of kids and first-time trampers so some of the normal hut etiquette etc goes out the door.

The Pinnacles Walk offers a perfect blend of adventure and accessibility, making it an excellent choice for those new to overnight hiking. Whether you opt for a day trip or an overnight stay, the stunning views and well-equipped hut ensure a memorable experience. Pack your gear, book your spot, and get ready to explore one of New Zealand’s most scenic trails.
