As a Deputy Principal I’ve had the privilege of conducting numerous interviews for various positions at schools. Through these experiences, one aspect has consistently stood out to me: the importance of asking questions. While candidates often focus on preparing answers to anticipated queries, the art of asking thoughtful questions is equally crucial, if not more so.
Job interviews are not just about showcasing qualifications and skills; they’re also about evaluating the school culture, role expectations, and potential fit. Here’s why asking questions during an interview is paramount:
- Demonstrates Interest and Engagement: When a candidate poses insightful questions, it showcases their genuine interest in the role and the company. It indicates that they’ve done their homework and are invested in understanding how they can contribute effectively.
- Gains Clarity and Insight: Job descriptions often provide a surface-level understanding of the role. However, delving deeper through questions allows candidates to gain clarity on key responsibilities, team dynamics, and growth opportunities.
- Shows Critical Thinking Skills: Crafting thoughtful questions requires critical thinking and strategic awareness. It always shows me that the candidate is capable of analysing situations, identifying potential challenges, and seeking solutions.
- Highlights Communication Abilities: Effective communication is a fundamental skill as a teacher. Asking questions allows candidates to articulate their thoughts clearly and concisely, demonstrating their ability to communicate effectively.
- Leaves a Lasting Impression: In a sea of applicants, memorable interactions can make all the difference. Thoughtful questions leave a lasting impression on interviewers, showcasing the candidate’s enthusiasm, curiosity, and professionalism. Even if other aspects of the interview are comparable among candidates, the ability to ask insightful questions can set someone apart.
Asking questions during a job interview is essential for success. It’s a powerful tool for candidates to demonstrate their interest, gain valuable insights, showcase skills, and establish meaningful connections. Below is a list of great questions to ask.
